One name that can be considered synonymous with promoting African arts in Nigeria is that of Tokini Peterside, founder and CEO of ART X Lagos.
As the sixth edition of the ART X Lagos exhibition takes place this weekend at the Federal Palace Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nairametrics Founders Profile shines a spotlight on Tokini Peterside.
Tokini Peterside was born in Lagos, Nigeria and did some of her early education in Nigeria before moving to the UK where she studied at Cheltenham Ladies’ College and Westminster School. She obtained an Honors Bachelor of Laws from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2006. She later completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at INSEAD.
Tokini published a column on NEXT Newspapers between December 2008 and August 2010. Entitled “The Chopaholic”, this column featured a weekly restaurant review, making it Nigeria’s first independent restaurant reviewer. She has also contributed to the newspaper’s fashion magazine – Ãlan. She also created and managed the Fashion Auction House, a periodical luxury fashion show for almost two years.
As a recent graduate, Tokini got off to a good start with a marketing career in the luxury brand space. She joined the LVMH group in Nigeria and became Marketing Manager of MoÃ«t Hennessy, co-leads a team of 14 people in the country, to market a portfolio including brands such as Dom PÃ©rignon, Krug, MoÃ«t & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot and Ruinart champagnes. , Cognac Hennessy and Vodka BelvÃ©dÃ¨re.
The team tripled the company’s sales volumes in three years and received the brand’s first nomination by an African team at the Moet Hennessy Global Innovation Awards in 2011.
In 2012, she founded TP-Collectif, a strategy consulting firm at the crossroads of culture and luxury. On this platform, she was a strategy consultant and project developer, and provided strategy, business planning and marketing advice to luxury and cultural companies in Nigeria.
She has worked with clients like ALARA, the luxury concept store designed by David Adjaye and designed by Reni Folawiyo; and even the executive producers of Half of a yellow sun, the film based on the novel of the same title by Chimamanda Adichie. She also worked with Maki Oh, an award-winning fashion designer brand. His work with his various clients earned him the 2011 âCorporate Professional of the Yearâ award at the Future Awards Africa.
Creation of ART X Lagos
In 2016, Tokini restructured and created one of West Africa’s premier international art fairs – ART X Lagos. ART X Lagos has successfully exhibited over 40,000 visitors to top artists from Africa and the Diaspora, and is now “A reflection of Nigeria’s potential on the world stage” according to the Financial Times.
There are also additional platforms like ART X Live! – a dynamic showcase and a launching pad for emerging musicians and artists. The brand is also behind the ART X Prize, an award for emerging visual artists in Nigeria. ART X Collective also has a consulting branch that has supported entrepreneurs and pioneer brands over the years in the culture, design and luxury sectors.
In 2018, French President Emmanuel Macron was on an official visit to Lagos and attended a Nigerian contemporary art exhibition organized by ART X Collective, at the New Afrika Shrine as part of the âCelebration of African Cultureâ.
In 2020, ART X Lagos was disrupted by the backlash to the #EndSARS protests, and ART X Lagos then chose to mark the protests with an online exhibition in December featuring works by over 100 artists, filmmakers, protesters and photographers. .
Awards and recognition
In addition to being busy with ART X Lagos, Peterside sits on the Boards of Anap Jets, Yinka Shonibare’s GAS Foundation, Maki Oh, and the Lagos Fashion Awards Advisory Board. His works have been published in the Financial Times, CNN, The New York Times, Le Monde and Vogue, among others.
Tokini Peterside, in 2020, was on Apollo magazine’s 40 Under 40 list, and in 2018, she was on the continent’s top 30 pioneers list – the Quartz Africa Innovators 2018. She was on Fast Company. 100 most creative people in business list in 2019.
In 2017, she was named to the MIPAD 100, a list of Most influential people of African descent under 40, an initiative in favor of the UN International Decade for People of African Descent. In 2017, she was appointed Her Network Woman of the Year in the Arts category.
