Ryan Gosling tries to resurrect the skinny tie

Ryan Gosling is ready for a big year. Not only will he play Ken in the next Barbie film, but he is also currently on a world press tour for The gray mana psychological thriller that also stars Chris Evans and Ana De Armas – its first new release in just under half a decade.

And while we’ve grown accustomed to seeing low-key photos of him at Erewhon, Gos pulled out all the stops when it comes to his press tour. Last week, for the California premiere of his latest film, he donned a pale turquoise Gucci jacket and contrasting pants that looked straight out of Ken’s wardrobe.

Last night at the Berlin screening of The gray man he slipped into a shocking outfit that looked like Hugh Jackman’s ringleader in The greatest showman or a Technicolor member of “The Black Parade” from My Chemical Romance. Gosling, 41, wore straight-cut black trousers, a sharp-striped white shirt and an eye-catching tight-fitting scarlet jacket with black collar detailing. Bonkers and costumed, but also fun.

But even though we’re not about to start dressing like a dancer in Britney Spears Circus music video from 2008, there’s a part of Gosling’s look that annoys us. He embellished the look with a thin leather tie, which we think is about to get its own moment. Of course, skinny ties may have fallen out of favor in recent years and may remind you of Kate Moss falling out of a nightclub wearing one, or Pete Doherty in his heyday, the greatest fashion minds think differently.

Skinny ties, as opposed to the wider numbers of the 70s, have made the rounds in recent menswear collections. For Spring/Summer 2023, Belgian designer Dries van Noten paraded models in puffy sleeveless shirts over which thin cotton ties were layered. Céline, under the guidance of Gaulish designer Hedi Slimane who has always favored a slimmer figure when it comes to his clothes, also had his models wear the thinnest jacquard-print ties we’ve seen, each with a maximum width of 2 cm.

For Fall/Winter 2022 (the season that will be stocked on shelves by early next year), Casablanca models wore ultra-thin ties under puffy cardigans, and Egonlab, the French brand in booming, had thin ties worn over formal shirts. Elsewhere, Hugo, the sub-brand of Boss aimed at TikTokers, consistently offers thinner ties to wear with its sleazy tailoring.

Ready to join Gosling for the skinny tie revolution? Below are some of the best around.
