Rachel Weisz “surprised” but “delighted” to be offered the role of Marvel in Black Widow

Rachel Weisz said she was “quite surprised” but “really delighted” to be invited to star in a Marvel movie.

The actress, 51, who became a household name after starring alongside Brendan Fraser in blockbuster The Mummy, won an Oscar for her role in The Constant Gardener and starred in a series of acclaimed films, including The Favorite, The Lobster and About A Boy.

She stars alongside Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh and David Harbor in Black Widow, the long-awaited independent film for Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff and the first Marvel film directed by a female solo, Cate Shortland.

Weisz told the PA News Agency, “Cate was already attached as a director, and he’s actually someone I’ve wanted to work with for a very long time.

“I’m a real fan of her cinematic work and Scarlett brilliantly asked her to do the Black Widow movie and then I read the script and thought the role was a lot of fun.

“I was quite surprised to be invited to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but very, very happy and really delighted.”

She added: “Actually, I didn’t know until that second that it was the first time. [a solo woman has directed a Marvel film].

“About the hour, that’s what I’m saying!” Fantastic!

“Cate is so incredibly talented, and she has so much heart, soul and humor. And then she does action scenes and for me, some of the most iconic action scenes I have ever seen. stand between Scarlett and Florence Pugh, fighting to the death.

“It was just real. I really felt like they were going to kill each other. And it was incredibly exciting.

The film was originally slated for release in May 2020 but has been delayed due to the pandemic and will now have a double release in theaters and on the Disney + streaming service, for an additional fee.

Weisz said: “It’s a real great action movie with a lot of heart and soul and laughs, and I’m so glad we waited until the theaters were open because you have to see it with a great crowd, with popcorn, in a dark room.

“I think it will be really moving for people to be able to come together and experience a story like this on the big screen.”

Black Widow is out now in UK theaters and will be available on Disney + with Premier Access on July 9.
