Estate star Kieran Culkin described his sister’s death as “the worst thing that has ever happened”.
Culkin, the younger brother of Home Alone actor Macaulay, said the family will never recover from the loss of Dakota, who died aged 29 in 2008 after being hit by a car in southern California.
“It’s the worst thing that has ever happened, and there’s no coating to it,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.
“Each of us handled it very differently. I think everyone was just torn inside.
“What’s it like, 13 years old now?” Holy shit. It’s crazy. Jesus f ****** Christ. I accepted at the time that it was going to last forever, and that it would never get better. It’s always going to be devastating.
“I still cry out of nowhere. Something funny that she’s done is going to pop into my head and make me laugh, then I cry. Sometimes it’s knowing that she won’t meet my kids and they won’t have her, and it’s hard to describe what she was like.
Culkin, 39, is reprising the role of Roman Roy in the acclaimed HBO drama Succession, which returns for a third season later this month.
He said a moment in the season premiere featuring an argument between Roman and his sister Shiv – played by Australian Sarah Snook – reminded him of his sister.
The Snook character makes a funny face, something Culkin said that Dakota, who was also known as Cody, also used to do.
He said, “It’s just Cody’s decision. You could never blame her because, even if she was wrong, “Hard-hard-hard-hard-durrr! – then she wins the argument. Cody is rather roman-y. It’s like Roman is played by Darlene de Roseanne. Darlene Connor as Roman Roy.
Season 3 of Succession will begin airing in the UK on October 18.
