CHARLESTON, SC (WCBD) – After ranking among the best for years, Charleston has slipped to number two on the Condé Nast list of best small towns in America.
“Good things come in small packages, and nowhere is this more evident than in these 10 vibrant and reader-favorite cities,” the travel magazine wrote of its annual list.
Although Charleston is small in size, the city is full of charm, culture, history, and delicious southern cuisine.
Charleston has been at the top of the list for ten consecutive years by visitors who, according to Condé Nast, are “rarely prepared for the beauty of the city”. They credit the historic homes, cobblestone streets, waterfront views, and an “abundance of flower planters” that add to the ambience of the city.
Take the first place of this year – Aspen.
“After a year in which many of us have escaped the great outdoors, it’s no surprise that Aspen tops the list this year,” Conde Nast wrote.
A tourist destination known for its ski slopes and its escape from the real world. But the city of Colorado is not just a winter hotspot:
“If you’ve considered the city a summer destination, don’t: there’s plenty to do here when it warms up, like hiking the cave trail just east of town or checking out the art collection. rotating contemporary of the Aspen Art Museum, ”the magazine said.
After a pandemic year filled with closures and regulations, will we see Charleston return to the top of the list next year? It is certainly possible with the return of tourism.
College of Charleston director of tourism analysis Daniel Guttetag told News 2 ahead of the Labor Day holiday last month that a surge in tourism was expected in the final weeks of the summer. Noting also that overall tourism in the Lowcountry remains stable.
In fact, Guttentag said that according to his research, the second half of summer exceeded pre-pandemic tourism figures.
The Lowcountry likely saw another tourist boost headed for the Cooper River Bridge Run weekend.
Charleston isn’t the only city in South Carolina to make the top 10, Greenville placed 5th on Condé Nast’s list. Savannah, Georgia has also been included. You can view the full list by clicking here.
